Huckleberry: A Wyrd West RPG

Created by Huckleberry RPG

Huckleberry is a TTRPG about tragic cowboys in a world doomed to calamity… unless you save it. Take on the profession of a Maverick: a grizzled bounty hunter who rides out beyond the bounds of civilization with nothin’ but a big iron on their hip.

In Huckleberry, I like to encourage two bonds in players. First is the bond to their Maverick via self-expression and identity. Players have full control over what their Maverick looks like and how their abilities manifest. This is mechanically supported by Traits and Big Irons. Traits give an inkling to a "vibe" in their titles, benefits, and aversions, but physical qualities or visual components are only suggestions.

The Ironclad could be interpreted as a cyborg, with machines integrated into their flesh, or as a tinkerer with gadgets that hide Big Irons up their sleeve. Or anything else the imagination conjures up. All ideas are equally valid. Players create the fluff in Huckleberry.

The second bond I encourage is to the setting. Mavericks should feel connected to their Hole-in-the-Wall. It's the reason they risk their lives to push back against the Wyrd. OK, maybe silver chips have something to do with it as well. But the Hole-in-the-Wall reaps the benefits nonetheless and the people will show their appreciation. Mechanically, we support this via Pastimes- the quiet scenes in between the Bounties and Drives. The calm stretches of time where players soak up the world around them with no immediate danger.

But there's another mechanic that supports both types of bonds. It's something I'm quite proud of. Mounts are both an extension of a Maverick and a tie to the greater world outside of the Maverick. They're a reason to fight against the Wyrd AND a tool to fight with.

When creating the Mounts chapter, it was important to maintain the player's control over self-expression and identity. But we also had to balance this with the fact that many people don't know much about horses or the terms used to describe them. Fortunately, I work with very talented collaborators. Our illustrator, George Sellas put together an amazing chart depicting many of the different coat colors, patterns, and distinctive features that a horse can have.

If you enjoy the chaos that comes from RNG, you can create a horse with one throw of a dice pool. Each category uses a different die, from d4 through d12 (The d4 is only necessary if you roll a 6 on the d8). Alternatively, you can use the chart as a guide, creating your horse a la carte. And just like with Mavericks, there's room to get weird with it. The Wyrd-Touched entries show crazy mutations that a horse might experience in Huckleberry, but the spectrum goes far beyond a single image. You can describe your horse as strange or twisted as you like. Give it 8 legs and name it Sleipnir! Give it some horsefeathers and name it Chocobo. The choice is yours.

But there is one thing you don't have a choice in: telling me about your mounts! I want to hear what y'all are riding the Wyrd Frontier on. Leave a comment and let me know. :)

Unrolling Huckleberry's War Bag
11 months ago – Thu, Sep 18, 2025 at 02:41:13 PM

Time marches on, Huckleberry's upcoming BackerKit creeps ever closer (18 days!), and we have more goodies to unveil. I'm very excited to share that we're partnering with All Rolled Up to offer a custom, Huckleberry-themed version of their flagship gaming bag. Rolled ARUs are about the same size as an A5 book, offering convenience when storing and carrying Huckleberry's books and War Bag together.

These War Bags are for more than just dice. With pockets for pens, pencils, playing cards, notecards, dice, poker chips, or whatever else you want to cram in there, one bag carries everything you need. We already previewed Huckleberry's official playing cards in a previous update and rest assured, the oversized 72 card deck will easily fit in the War Bag's center pocket. Even better, Huckleberry's soft dice trays are also correctly sized to tidily roll inside.

Thanks to the War Bag, the "Tall Tale" all-in pledge rewards will bundle neatly together into the footprint of Huckleberry's corebook. I may be overly excited about this as I am a serial crowdfunding backer- shelf space is at a premium these days! Coincidentally, this adds the theoretical benefit of keeping shipping costs low. I want Huckleberry's fulfilment to be slim and sleek, y'all.

I first learned about the All Rolled Up from another RPG's crowdfunding campaign years ago and I immediately grabbed one. Since then it's become the most reliable piece of my gaming kit. The ability to grab a single bag and have everything I need to game from dice to cards to pens to scratch paper is gamechanging. I've not run a single session of Huckleberry in-person without my ARU at my side.

Early on in the making of this BackerKit, I made a promise to myself that I'd only offer rewards that I would personally use at the table. The dice and playing cards are obvious choices, but the War Bag is the reward I'm most excited to have. I cannot recommend it enough. (Seriously, I've been telling people to buy All Rolled Ups for years. They're the best!)

Wyrd Water or Wyrd Blood?

We're now less than one month away from the launch of Huckleberry's BackerKit and with October rapidly approaching, I thought it was time to reveal one of my favorite rewards from the campaign: DICE!

Like most gamers, I love collecting the click-clack math rocks. One of the earliest of Huckleberry's design choices was to create a game that uses two sets of dice. We have all the dice and we want to use all the dice! It's was a no-brainer to offer two unique sets of dice for Huckleberry's BackerKit campaign.

Each 6 die set is made of premium resin with sharp-edges and silver inking. It includes a d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4. What's more is that the d4s are "power rollers", meaning they're shaped like a d12, but number 1-4 three times! Additionally, the 1 on each die will be replaced by the Huckleberry Spade. You'll immediately know when you roll the dreaded Snake Eyes.

Both sets are themed around the Wyrd—the corruptive and supernatural force of nature that taints everything in the Fifth World. The Wyrd Water set features a liquid core encased in blue resin. The silver flakes will continue to ebb and flow, long after the die stops rolling. The Wyrd Blood set is cast with a beautiful crimson resin and speckled with silver flaking, just like the powerful blood that runs through a Maverick's veins. Backers can choose between getting a single set, both, or two matching sets.

So what's it gonna be? Are you going to spill Wyrd Water or Wyrd Blood?

A Fistful of Aces!

Huckleberry's BackerKit is looming large on the horizon. We're only one short month away before you can reserve your physical copy of the game! But books aren't all we have to offer... We've been hard at work designing the one of the coolest playing card decks you'll ever see. George has been very excited with this little project and you can see his passion shining through in every card. I mean, just look at those Aces—they're gorgeous!

Each piece of art is designed to reflect the world of Huckleberry, allowing Trailbosses to utilize the deck as an in-game prop. These could be the very same cards that your Mavericks use to play Wyrd Poker. And, of course, it's still fully functional as a standard playing card deck in it's own right.

But most importantly, Huckleberry Playing Cards are designed to be the perfect tool for Trailbosses running games in the Wyrd Frontier. Each deck includes the standard 52 cards, a set of Jokers, and four additional sets of Aces to be used as player tokens. That's 20 Aces total! The deck totals a whopping 72 cards. The mathematically inclined among you might be wondering what those extra two cards might be...

For a Few Jokers More...

The Huckleberry Playing Card deck has extra jokers! We're including four suited Jokers, allowing for Trailbosses to use unique (and optional) Antes. Suited Jokers allow for real chaos to be unleashed, where players must deal with the heightened threat of a Face Card, while still receiving the benefit of an increased Wyrd Die that comes with drawing a Joker. The Wyrd doesn't have favorites, after all. It can shine upon you one moment, abandon you the next, and (with this deck) do both at the same time!
